Alex: I disagree with the author of this article. If you can’t be bothered to read it, the author basically says that he doesn’t like Maxxie’s character because he isn’t so stereotypically gay - i.e. he IS popular, he ISN’T a hair dresser, etc. However from some of the messages I’ve read around the internet, Maxxie’s character has helped some people come out and accept themselves as gay, and also helped launch homosexuality as something that is normal and perfectly acceptable in today’s society.

Maxxie is the best gay character I’ve ever seen on TV. He has helped me a lot. He makes it so, so… I dunno, like normal. It’s like, yeah, I’m gay - so what? I’m not gonna stop going to parties, hanging out with my friends, stop being confident because of it. I believe he has helped millions of teenage boys find themselves, and Mitch Hewer deserves the biggest applaud for that in my opinion. That was the first thing that pulled me into the show. I loved the fact he didn’t act camp all the time. He was just a normal lad, who happened to be gay. Sterotypical gay is someone who acts like a girl, and that’s no always the case. Maxxie is more realistic. I just love him. Everytime I watch skins, I want more Maxxie on screen. Best ever!!!!
im glad maxxie on skins has helped people “come out” and everything, but i just thought people might like to know that Maxxie may be gay, but mitch Hewer , who plays maxxie, isn’t, he has a girlfriend and ive been told by a relation of the skins costume designer, that mitch even needs counsilling on set as he feels really awkward playing a gay character as he is straight, and he finds difficulty coping with it. He portrays a gay character really well mind and im glad he helps gay people be more confident about their sexuality.
I’m sorry Elliot but I think your talking bollocks.
Having seen god knows how many interviews with Mitch not once did he say he’s had a problem with being in a “gay mindset”.
If someone needed counseling to get their heads round homosexuality then they are really not going to succeed in life and especially as an actor.
Calm down Alex and stop being so defensive, Elliot is simply saying Mitch found it difficult playing a gay character, when he is in fact straight in reality. I wouldn’t be surprised if gay actors struggled playing heterosexual actors.
Quite frankly, behaving in a sexual manner with a gender that you are in no way attracted to must be challenging, regardless of whether you are gay or straight.
