Joe also told me about his new movie The Damned United, on which he’s working with Jim Broadbent and Timothy Spall. It’s a film about Brian Clough’s forty-four day reign as coach at Leeds United and he’s playing footballer Duncan McKenzie. Joe said that working with such amazing actors like Jim has meant it has really been a "watch and learn experience" for him, and he was so excited about the opportunity. He laughed as he told me that as it’s set a few decades ago we’ll get to see him looking a little silly and wearing some interesting wigs. I can honestly say Joe was the loveliest celeb I met backstage on Sunday, he was genuinely nice and said he hoped we could sit down for a longer chat with him soon, so watch this space!

Chris Miles may have left our lives for good, but in the real world, outside of Skins, (which sometimes we forget isn’t real) Joe Dempsie is alive and well you’ll be pleased to know. 4Talent caught up with Joe to find out how it feels to be shouted at in the street, and what his plans for the future are.

Joe’s already got an episode of Doctor Who under his belt (‘The Doctor’s Daughter’, fact fans) and there’s plenty more where that came from, thank you very much. “After being in Skins, I want to wait ’til the right project comes along. It has been a great platform” Dempsie would, however, like to work with director Shane Meadows (This is England, Dead Man Walking), who is also from Joe’s home town of Nottingham and who casts from the same Nottingham drama group that launched Dempsie. "I would love to work with him and I like the way he works too; his films have a really natural feel and are always plot driven."

Joe recalls the first time the potential success of Skins hit him. "I remember the advertising campaign for Skins. We had no idea how big it was going to be," he says. "You know CentrePoint in London – they have a huge billboard there and Skins was on it. I remember looking at it thinking, this programme is going to be big. Ironically enough it was during that period a year ago when there were really high winds and it blew off." Luckily that didn’t affect the show too much. In fact, every billboard in the UK could have blown off in some freak Wizard of Oz style accident, and people would still be talking about THAT trailer , before the show had even aired. Luckily, Skins lived up to the hype, winning a load of awards to boot.

So what’s it like playing such a popular, likable character? Chris, er Joe says "I am much more boring that he is!" Isn’t everyone? He says the most awkward situations are when people notice him walking by and shout out, ‘SKINS!’ or ‘CHRIS!’ "I am not going to shout back, ‘Oh! Lovely!’ So I just keep walking."
Before Skins or ‘BS’ as we refer to it, Joe actually trained for 7 years at the Central Junior Television Workshop in Nottingham and then Skins came along. "For me, it was all about right place at the right time" he admits. We can honestly say we’re pleased he came into our lives; we couldn’t imagine another Chris, it doesn’t bear thinking about.
Holy cow
This is a joke btw!
Skins star Joe Dempsie has blasted indie rockers Foals for dismissing the significance of their appearance on the TV show.
Dempsie argued that Foals were given a leg-up by performing on the Channel 4 drama series and said the Oxford rockers’ attitude had got the cast’s "backs up".
He told NME: "They may deny it, but Foals did very well out of appearing in the episode we did on MySpace last summer.
"I think they’re great, but they seemed to rubbish their involvement in Skins, which got our backs up a little bit. They seemed to be stressing over the fact they’d never watched the show. But whatever. They’re a good band and they seem to be doing really well."
Foals released there debut album Antidotes on March 24. Lead singer Yannis Philippakis recently said the group would try to avoid the limelight whenever possible.

Skins star Joe Dempsie has landed a role in Doctor Who.
The actor, who plays wildchild Chris in the E4 teen drama, will appear as a soldier who sees his comrades murdered by aliens.
However, he admitted that he had never watched the sci-fi hit before taking the part.
He told The Mirror: "I play a misguided soldier. To be honest I’d never seen the show before."
Other guest stars lined up for the fourth series include Alex Kingston, Sarah Lancashire and Felicity Kendal.

That wasn’t a bad interview…with Joe – what the fuck was up with Mitch? Was he drunk or what? He just played with his hair, and couldn’t sit comfortably for the 5 minutes or whatever they were on. He just looked very uncomfortable the whole time.
Many thanks to Skinsis for the video. The audio isn’t amazing but it’s not too bad either. You can watch it on the Imp for another 4 days at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b009507g.shtml

Tonight 10.30pm, BBC Three (Freeview Channel 7, haven’t a clue about Sky)
West Bridgford actor Joe Demspie is spreading his wings as he takes a flight with the Doctor.
It’s been a hectic couple of years for 20-year-old Joe Dempsie. The former product of Nottingham’s Junior Television Workshop based in Stoney Street, was thrust into the public eye when he won the part of Chris in E4’s teen series Skins.
The show’s back for a second series but it’ll be the last for Joe and the majority of the existing cast.
Moving on
The show is based around a group of teenagers in 6th form college and since they’ll be about to head to university come the end of the second season the decision has been made to start series three with a new group of teenagers.
But Joe isn’t too worried.
“It’s important professionally for everyone to move on. You’ve got to be brave and say it’s time to do other stuff now.”
Doctor Who
That other stuff includes a generous role in an upcoming episode of Dr Who. Even better for Joe Dempsie was that his acting qualities caught the eye of the Dr Who producers.
“They rang up and they just offered me the part. I didn’t even have to audition.
“I’ve never really watched Doctor Who before. I’m not a Sci-Fi fan. I just thought I might never get offered a part straight up again. It would be rude to say no.”
Joe will play the part of a soldier called Klein who sees his colleagues gradually killed off by aliens.
“It’s a complicated story line. I take the doctor back to my camp and explain what’s going on.”

Nottingham roots
Such fame means Joe gets back to Nottingham less often than he’d like although he admits to returning every now and then with a suitcase full of dirty washing for his mum to clean.
“When we finished filming the first series of the show I came back home and had a fair amount of time to chill out here.
“This time around it’s been much more full on and it hardly seems like I’ve been here at all.
“But I enjoy it more when I am here. Before I took Nottingham for granted. Now when I get off the train I feel very much at home.”
The mighty Reds
One thing that always draws Joe Dempsie home is his love of Nottingham Forest. Like all other Reds fans he’s keeping his fingers crossed it’s promotion this time around.
“We just need to get some consistency. Promotion’s definitely still on the cards. I want to avoid the play-offs desperately. I don’t think changing a manager at the moment would do us any favours.”
