“Devfest” – Next Saturday on E4!!!

Straight from e4.com:

Skins massive! Guess what? To celebrate the bloody massive worldwide success of our Dev’s film Slumdog Millionaire (and the massive 8 Oscars it won!) the E4 head honchos have put their heads together and devised Devfest – the festival of Dev.

Ok, we made up the ‘festival of Dev bit’. But we are proud of Dev aka skins’ Anwar Patel. Like we’re some loony aunt who tells everyone the same story at every Christmas – allow us to repeat ourselves: Dev was an unknown when auditions for the first series of skins began. In fact, he was more interested in preparing for his Science GCSE exam than auditioning for some new tv show. Except his mum wouldn’t hear of it, and persuaded him to turn up to the auditions, even though he’d never even acted before. Skins Casting Director Jane Ripley met Dev and cast him as Anwar.

We were with Jane when she watched Dev on Letterman, and we can attest that Jane was very proud indeed when she saw Dev was doing so well – weren’t we all?

So to celebrate E4 will be showing three classic skins eps (series 1, episodes 6 and 9, series 2 ep 2) featuring Dev, followed by The Making of Slumdog Millionaire, all on E4 on Saturday March 14th from 9pm.

Enjoy

Congrats to Dev Patel

Congratulation to Dev Patel and the cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire, they where nominated for 10 oscars and won 8 including best picture and best director, I know we’ve not posted much on Dev success instead focusing on the current skins series, but I think its a absolute achievement for Dev and skins aswell as it just shows how far the actors can go, last year Dev was in Skins now his in Hollywood at the Oscars I bet it must be surreal espcially as its his second acting job but it great regardless so congratulation.

Boss of TV show Skins on launching career of Slumdog Millionaire actor

THE brains behind TV teen smash Skins has revealed his pride at launching Dev Patel on the road to Hollywood.

Bryan Elsley gave the 18-year-old his break in the Channel 4 show before he shone in Oscar-tipped Slumdog Millionaire.

Dev’s Skins performance convinced Trainspotting directorDanny Boyle to give him the lead role in the Mumbai-based blockbuster.

The film has picked up Golden Globes and Dev has been nominated as Best Leading Actor at the Baftas. He just missed out on the Oscars shortlist but is in talks with Hollywood producers.

And if he needs any advice, Skins creator and producer Bryan, 47, is on call.

He said: “Dev is an extraordinarily work with him again. But I’d love to work with every member of the cast again and I’msure I will.

“We take a close interest in them after they leave and see a lot of them in oneway or another.

“We encourage our actors to think of Skins as a fun thing and a great experience which might turn into something or might not.”

Bryan knows all about the ups and downs of showbusiness.

He was in comedy duo Dusty and Dick with Harry Enfield until his friend dumped him just before they were due to hit the big time on Saturday Night Live.

The dad-of-four, who grew up in Dalkeith, Midlothian, clearly does not hold a grudge as Enfield also stars in Skins. And Bryan is not averse to making tough decisions either.

When the third series of the controversial show started on E4 last week there was barely a recognisable face among the cast.

The actors who were in the first two series – including Dev, About A Boy star Nicholas Hoult, Mike Bailey and April Pearson – have been axed for a new generation.

The line-up includes Kaya Scodelario, who plays Hoult’s sister, and Luke Pasqualino. Bryan said: “It wasn’t hard because they all understood. The simple logic is the kids are moving on.

“The show is all about youth and innovation so you have to innovate and change things.”

Skins is loosely based on pals of Bryan’s son Jamie, who is one of the show’s young writers.

Bryan is thrilled and surprised by its success.

He said: “The principle of it is young people get something which is made for them with a lot of love and a lot of attention to detail because young people respond well to that.

“I thought Skins was a little experiment and would come and go unnoticed so to be in this position is very gratifying.”

Bryan, who is now based in London, also wroteGovanGhost Story, The Crow Road, 40 and created The Young Person’s Guide To Being A Rock Star.

The award-winning comedy, which starred Simone Lahbib and featured guest turns from Noel Gallagher, Chrissie Hynd and Jay Kay, followed the rise and fall of Glasgow band Jocks Wa Hey. Bryan said: “In some ways it was a rehearsal for Skins.

“The characters were older but it had that same slightly scurrilous, almost cartoonesque comedy.”

It is just as well his sense of humour is intact. As the oldest person involved in Skins he really is the daddy – and feels it.

He said: “I amthe oldest by 25 years. They treatme like a slightly lunatic uncle who’s worth humouring because he is liable to have a tantrum if they don’t behave.

“But it is keeping me young.

Well, that’s what I say publicly.

The reality is I’m knackered.”

Young actors find life after Skins

It was a bit of a shocker when the makers of hit series Skins announced that, with the exception of just a few characters, the entire cast was being axed at the end of the second series.

And so, Chris died of a brain haemorrhage, Maxxie and Anwar boarded a bus bound for London, Sid followed Cassie to New York and Michelle and Tony headed off to university.

But as they all sailed off into their respective sunsets, what has become of the teenage actors who were plucked from obscurity to star in the show?

The cast met up at the opening night of a new play in London’s West End starring one of their number, Welsh actress Aimee-Ffion Edwards – who played the ever-so-slightly deranged Sketch.

She’s now playing the character of Raggedy Anne in SH*T M*X, which is a bit like a south London based episode of Skins set on the stage.

She told Newsbeat: “Since Skins it’s been mental, things really changed in my life and I really wanted to do some theatre.

“I’m so glad I got the chance to do this because she’s a great character and it’s so different to Sketch.

“And it was good to play a Londoner so I don’t get typecast as the Welsh girl.

“I’d still like to do a bit of comedy or period, just something completely different.”

But what have the other actors been up to?

Dev Patel

Dev Patel played the sex-obsessed Anwar in Skins. It was his first ever acting job and turns out he caught the eye of a certain British filmmaker called Danny Boyle, director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later.

Patel takes the central role in Slumdog Millionaire, the story of an impoverished Indian teenager becoming a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be A Millionaire?

He said: “I was filming in India for four or five months, everyone was so passionate on set. The scale of it was so different.

“Working somewhere like Mumbai was so chaotic, there were different challenges every day and working with someone like Danny Boyle really whips your butt into shape.”

The film was shown at the Toronto Film Festival and went on to win the Cadillac People’s Choice Award, voted for by audiences

He said: “I’m very proud of doing Skins, it put us on the radar. I wish I could have done it now that I’m more experienced as an actor.”

Larissa Wilson and April Pearson

Sadly, not all of the cast have been so fortunate in their film choices.

April Pearson, aka Michelle, and Larissa Wilson who played Jal, both star in a new British horror film called Tormented.

It hardly treads new ground as a bullied teenager comes back from the dead to take revenge on his classmates.

It also stars teen heart-throb Alex Pettyfer from the Stormbreaker movie.

Nicholas Hoult and Joe Dempsie

The cast were largely inexperienced when they began work on the first series of Skins, with three notable exceptions. Joe Dempsie, Daniel Kaluuya and Nicholas Hoult.

Hoult’s most famous role prior to Skins was opposite Hugh Grant in About A Boy. Now he’s cranking it up a dramatic notch, starring opposite Kenneth Branagh.

He said: “I’ve got something called Wallander starting on BBC1 in a little bit. We got to go to Sweden to film it.

Surprisingly, Hoult admits he has barely watched either of the two series of Skins.

He said: “I watched about four episodes altogether, from the two series.

“In a few years time to look back on it would be nice but when you’re working on it and you know all the people, I never really enjoy watching the stuff that I’m in.”

“It’s a little known fact that at any time of the day, Nicholas Hoult is on four different TV channels”, joked Dempsie.

He has just finished working opposite Michael Sheen in the movie, The Damned United. It’s about legendary football manager Brian Clough’s 44-day reign in charge of Leeds United.

But did he have to brush up on his football skills?

Dempsie said: “The guy I’m playing is called Duncan McKenzie who was a bit of a showman and technically gifted, so it’s a good job I didn’t have to play an awful lot.

“We did some football training, but then they saw that we were all crap that they just used archive footage anyway.”

Dan Kaluuya

Dan Kaluuya is one of the few former cast members who is still active with series three of Skins but now he’ll be working behind the scenes.

Kaluuya wrote one of the episodes from the second series and is writing another episode for the new characters.

He admitted that he doesn’t know if fans of the show will take to the new series

He said: “It’s a new generation, the kids that were in primary school haven’t seen the show and it should attract new fans.

“But the fans that loved the first two series? You just don’t know how it will be received. I’ve seen the rushes though and they’re very, very funny.”

Outside of the writing, Kaluuya played the young Cass Pennant in the biopic of the former football hooligan turned author.

And taking a bit of a break from acting is Hannah Murray, known to Skins fans as the barking but sweet Cassie.

She’s done an episode of Miss Marple and is heading off to Cambridge University to study English.

Series three of Skins is currently being filmed on location in Bristol.

Slumdog Millionaire

Dev Patel’s new film Slumdog Millionaire is out soon. Here is a video and some pictures of him in it and at various premieres:

Former ‘Skins’ Star Dev Patel (’Anwar’) is now playing a new role of Indian teen ‘Jamal Malik’ in the story of how a impoverished Indian teen became a contestant on the Hindi version of “Who Wants to be A Millionaire?” — an endeavor made without prize money in mind, rather, an effort to prove his love for his friend Latika (Pinto), who is an ardent fan of the show.
