Skins in Digital Spy Top 20 of 2007

Tube Talk’s Top 20 TV Series of 2007

Skins made it at no 4 on digital spy’s top 20 tv shows of 2007 this what they had to say;

Launched in January, Skins was as a series that can unequivocally be termed a “cultural phenomenon”. With its outrageous yet rooted storylines, backed by a bawdy marketing campaign and stonking theme tune, the show successfully managed to capture the zeitgeist of teen Britain in 2007.

Adam Smith -Skins Director Interveiw

Adam directed four episodes of SKINS 3,4,8, and 9
Thanks to Anon for the information.

When Adam Smith and his friend Joe Wright went to London’s Scala Cinema in the late 80s and early 90s, they’d watch classics such as Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets and say to each other, “We’re gonna make films one day, we’re gonna do that.” Wright, of course, has gone on to receive acclaim for his refreshing take on costume dramas with Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, and now Smith is gearing up to make the move into features.

The acclaimed director of music videos for Jamie T (Sheila), The Streets (Blinded By The Lights, When You Wasn’t Famous) and Chemical Brothers (Galvanize) is also the man behind one of the most popular shorts on BBC Film Network – What Goes Up Must Come Down, a Cockney rap-narrative starring Charlie Creed-Miles. That short acted as a bridge between Adam’s earlier work and his first ’straight’ directorial work, on four episodes of Channel 4’s teen series Skins in 2006.

“After Skins there were quite a few offers for telly stuff, but I really wanted to do my own thing,” Adam tells Film Network from the Soho office where he’s developing his first feature. “I met up with Mark Herbert at Warp and found him really inspiring. There are two ideas I’m working on – one is a fictionalised documentary, which at the moment is a Warp X project and is going to be developed through improvisational workshops. I’m working with three actors, so we’ve cast it already.”

When it comes to revealing what the film will be about, Adam is loathe to discuss things for fear of “hexing” the project. He does reveal, however, that it will “play with the form a little bit, because we’ll use quite a lot of real footage as well as fictionalised stuff”.

In the video above Adam talks about some of the key moments in his career – the documentary A.I.P.S., The Streets music video Blinded By The Lights, and directing Skins – and dying in Nastassja Kinski’s arms.

Jamie’s Blog

Jamie Brittian one of the skins creators has posted on his blog.

So, series 2 is wrapped! I was on set last Friday to watch them shoot the last scene. Everyone; all the crew, the writers, the producers, those faceless BASTARDS at e4 (Joke!) are really pleased with and proud of what we’ve all accomplished this year. Though it’s a few month’s before we’re truly finished editing, dubbing and grading, the hard graft is done for most (though not for our most excellent and diligent editors, dubbers, and graders) and the general consensus is that series 2 of Skins is harder, faster, stronger and fuck it, better than series 1. I hope that’s not too much of an insult to all the work that everyone put in on series 1! (which is something we’re all proud of too).

Before I forget, there’s a new Skins website up now. It’s quite funky. The Skins writers have contributed blogs and video diary’s, which are all good fun, and are full of fun stuff.

Last couple of days, I’ve been shooting one of our online webisodes. Chris Clough, our producer, thought it would be fun to let some members of the team direct. I’ve done one, the 1st Assistant Director Adam Locke has done one (possibly the only person to really know what he was doing), the very able Mr Ben Schiffer has done two (he gets to do two because he’s sleeping with the King of Telly), Ms Josie Long did one and Mr Nicholas Hoult (Yes! Him off the telly!) did one.

Now, I can’t speak for the others, but I was fucking petrified when I did mine. It turned out well, but my dream of being the next Paul Thomas Anderson is further away than I thought, methinks. Mine will be shown before episode 6, Ben’s excellent Christmas episode will be on the net on Christmas Day (same time as the Queen’s speech).

Now, I’m not going to give too much away here, but series 3 is already being thought up. I’m going to piss off publicity by talking about this, but a couple of weeks ago, me and the writing team went off to a hotel near Newmarket to cook up ideas. Here’s a photo of us there:

From left to right; that’s me standing up, Lucy Kirkwood, Ben Schiffer, Daniel Kaluuya and Toby Welch (he came along to take notes).

As I say, I’m not giving anything away but we’re very excited.

Oh, sorry about the commentaries – I couldn’t get the technology sorted out in time and now the flatmate with the gear has moved out. Sorry. I’ll try and get them done soon.

Keep the comments coming, and have a good Xmas.
