Raw Cuts: The Finalists

Abi Brennan, 16, entered the Channel 4 and NSPCC Raw Cuts: ID competition earlier this year, after hearing about it on the Skins myspace, the aim was for 13 to 18 year olds were asked to explore their identity on film.

As a student from Northampton, she is one of only four young filmmakers to win a Channel 4 competition to produce and broadcast their own short film later this year.

After producing a web log and video diary that showed the 16-year-old with her friends in Northampton, Abi beat off competition from thousands of other aspiring film producers to shoot a 59-second film.

She was then selected along with three other young people out of eight finalists in the competition to go on to write and produce her own short film, which is due to appear on Channel 4’s programme 3 Minute Wonder.

Abi, who has just received her GCSE results from Thomas Becket school in Northampton, said: “The
59-second film starts with me introducing myself.

“I’m really keen on Batman, and the film was about me describing my different personalities and showing how I am.

“I heard about the competition on the Skins website, and it was really good working with Channel 4. Everyone was really nice.”

Shooting for Abi’s short film begins next month, and the teenager has already written the script for her voiceover.

She said: “My director is working on his bit, and I’m working on mine separately.

“The new film will expand on the last one, and hopefully people can find something to relate to in it.

“It will probably be shown some time next year.”

Abi is going on to study psychology, human biology, and video and film at college in September, although she would like to become a mental health nurse.

She said: “I’m not sure if I want to be a film producer. I’m keeping my options open.”

KT Tunstall mistakes ‘Skins’ actor

KT Tunstall was left embarrassed after she mistook Skins and About A Boy actor Nicholas Hoult, for another young actor live on radio.

The Scottish singer was being interviewed on Simon Mayo’s Radio 5 Live show to talk about her new album Drastic Fantastic, alongside fellow guest Hoult yesterday.

But live on air she got mixed up and told the young star: “I loved you in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory“.

Hoult, who is about to appear in TV drama Coming Down the Mountain, simply replied: “I wasn’t in it.”

Skins – The Soundtrack!

Bursting with killer tunes, like Bloc Party’s ‘Positive Tension’ and Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs ‘Date With The Night’ and dripping with heavy beats such as Roots Manuva ‘Witness The Fitness’ and Tricky’s ‘Hell Around The Corner’, the 19-track album is the most fun you can have with your clothes on...

Tracks are taken from key scenes in series one and includes the Skins Theme Tune by Fat Segal (made available for the first time ever!)

Of course the Skins soundtrack would not be complete without the signature tune, Gossip’s ‘Standing In The Way of Control’. The closing track on the album ‘Wild World’ is also of note as it is sung by Sid. The song is a cover of the classic Cat Stevens track, and re-entered the Top 40 earlier this year on the back of it being sung on the show.

Let the party continue!

Skins’ success made Hoult quit school

Nick Hoult has revealed that he decided to quit school when a second series of Skins was commissioned.

The 17-year-old actor, who plays lothario Tony in the teen drama series, realised that his grades would suffer if he attempted to slot school work around his Skins filming schedule.

He told Heat: “The (Skins) viewing figures were good, so they said they were going again. I decided to leave school at that time because I realised I would never get good grades working so much. I can always go back and do my A-levels.”

The second series of Skins, which began shooting in Bristol earlier this summer, is expected to air on E4 in January.

The Show

SERIES 1
Skins follows a group of teenagers living on the bright side, who get high, get drunk, get laid and get up for their A levels. These kids really grab life by the balls and then give it a twirl.

Tony (Nicholas Hoult) is the best-looking boy in town. His sidekick Sid (Mike Bailey) is less successful with the ladies, much less; until bonkers anorexic case Cassie (Hannah Murray) turns up. But Sid’s in love with Michelle (April Pearson), the school fittie, who goes out with Tony, of course. Then there’s sassy musician Jal (Larissa Wilson), party animal Chris (Joe Dempsie), Maxxie (Mitch Hewer) and best mate Anwar (Dev Patel), who manages to combine the pills, the thrills and the spills with his faith, well sort of.

Guest stars on Skins include Harry Enfield, Neil Morrissey, Sarah Lancashire, Danny Dyer, Peter Capaldi, Josie Lawrence and, Arabella Weir.

Skins is the new series from the makers of award-winning Shameless. Series 1 was written by a team of writers with an average age of 22, including: Simon Amstell (Never Mind the Buzzcocks), the Dawson brothers (Balls of Steel, Dirty Tricks), Jack Thorne (Shameless), Josie Long (Edinburgh Comedy festival Best Newcomer 2006), Ben Schiffer, Jamie Brittain, Camilla Blackett and creator and executive producer Bryan Elsley (The Young Person’s Guide To Becoming a Rock Star, 40, The Crow Road).

SERIES 2

Six months on from the accident Tony (Nicholas Hoult) isn’t dead, but he sure isn’t t he same person. Getting back on top of things is even harder when your friends are all acting weird. Sid (Mike Bailey) can’t get his head around the fact that his best mate is a shadow of the man he’s always looked up to. And to top it all he finally got the girl only to have her whisked off to Scotland by her crazy parents. But to Cassie (Hannah Murray) it’s okay because one day she’ll come back and they’ll live happily ever after… yeah right.

Michelle (April Pearson) is lost. Her mum has gone and married yet another man, and this time there’s a step-sister involved who’s trying to make a move on her mates. Maxxie’s (Mitch Hewer) getting hell at home too because his Dad doesn’t want him to follow his dream of being a dancer. Even Anwar (Dev Patel) has changed since he bagged himself a mystery girlfriend. Her mates are mixed up, but Jal (Larissa Wilson) is throwing off the good-girl image and letting her hair down. And as for Chris (Joe Dempsie), getting expelled wasn’t his finest hour, but now the party animal is stepping out on his own, so at least his future looks bright. What could possibly go wrong?

Bill Bailey and Josie Long are among a host of new guest stars joining Harry Enfield, Arabella Weir and Peter Capaldi for series two. Skins is written by a team of writers and young contributors, with co-creators Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain.
