E4 Prize Winner

E4 Prize Winner

Multimedia Foundation Degree student, Sarah Ingram, recently won third prize in a national competition for E4. The television channel encouraged viewers to become involved with their new programme Skins by creating short films around the characters.

“I picked Cassie because she was the most interesting character on paper (and the most ridiculous),” said Sarah.

“We were provided with a quick brief on each of the characters; Cassie’s character was basically troubled, with an eating disorder. I thought the actress was very interesting-looking and pretty as well, so I did some sketches on paper and then drew them very quickly in Adobe Illustrator.”

“I saw Cassie as being manic depressive, so the dream-sequence at the beginning of my film was a way of showing her feeling deliriously happy and manic at one end of the scale, juxtaposed with the reality of when she wakes up.”

Sarah’s film has been featured on E4’s website since she won the prize. She also won tickets to the premier of Skins in London along with travel and hotel accommodation. She also attended the after show party and received an E4 goodie bag.

Multimedia students are actively encouraged to seek out national and regional competitions to widen their portfolios and experience. “I only found out about the competition the day before the deadline,” said Sarah. “First prize was a work placement with Channel 4… Next time!”

The Crew

The Creators

Bryan Elsley – writer (episodes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8) and co-creator/executive producer
Bryan, born in 1961, spent most of his childhood in the Edinburgh satellite town of Dalkeith before going on to study English and History at York University. It was there he met a young student named Harry Enfield. The two of them shared a passion for taking the mickey and decided to form a comedy duo – which became known as Dusty and Dick. Dusty and Dick’s Lucky Escape From The Germans proved a sell-out hit at the Edinburgh festival. After parting from Enfield, Elsley took up a career in theatrical direction before going on to write, first for the theatre then for television. His seminal short film Govan Ghost Story paved the way for other writing jobs on British serials. In 1996 he wrote the award-winning adaptation of Iain Banks’ The Crow Road and two years later The Young Person’s Guide to Becoming a Rock Star. Since, Elsley has written several original series and films, including 40 with Eddie Izzard (2003), Nature Boy (2000) and Rose and Maloney with Sarah Lancashire (2002-2005).

College student in popular E4 drama Skins

All drama students dream of the big break – and for one student at City of Bristol College, 18 year old Michael Bailey, this dream became a reality when he was selected to play Sid in Skins, the E4 drama currently appearing on our screens.

Photograph: Sid and other characters at a party in Skins.Explained Michael, who is in his second year of the National Diploma of Performing Arts at City of Bristol College: “A casting agent came to the college for auditions. A few of us attended a series of recalls and I was lucky enough to be given the part of Sid.”

Filming took place in Bristol between June and December last year. Michael added: “It was strange to see my character on screen. His main part comes in the fifth episode so people may start to recognise me then!”

Michael’s tutor, Paula Whatman, is delighted that not only did Michael secure himself one of the main parts in this TV drama series about a group of teenagers, but a number of other students appeared in the programme as extras.

Photogrpah: Still from Skins television programme of Sid at a party with his friends. She said: “Our course focuses on both theatre and acting to camera and we give the students plenty of opportunity to try out the performance techniques we teach through gritty and topical productions. Michael did exceptionally well and we are proud of his achievement.”

Michael’s success follows that of other ex City of Bristol College drama students, who have appeared on programmes such as Little Britain and Casualty.

So are Michael’s sights set on greater things now? He said: “I definitely want to continue acting, I may try and go to drama school and I may even sign up with an agent to see what other acting parts come my way.”
