Mitch Hewer Inteview
Could you explain the concept of the show, as you see it?
“It’s about 8 teenagers, based in Bristol, about their friendships, their relationships, and [the] issues they have. Normal issues you have to overcome in your life. It’s funny, it’s got a lot of humour in it. The parents are all played by really well known actors like Harry Enfield, Danny Dyer and Sarah Lancashire. It’s a good laugh, it’s a good programme.”
How did the huge amount of pre-show publicity make you feel?
“I was excited a bit, but then I was nervous at the same time, because I was worried. There’s a new television series, new things get criticised. I was worried in that respect, but I was also really excited.”
Now you play the gay character, Maxxie. What’s he like?
“I’m just one of the guys, one of the mates, one of the lads, really. He’s gay and gets on with life as normal. Hangs around with Chris, Anwar and the girls, really. He’s a bit mischievous, a mysterious character, like gets up to things and yeah, he’s just a good character.”
What was it like for you as an actor playing a gay role?
“It wasn’t an issue. It was no issue to me at all. I’m just an actor, playing a role, and for Max to be gay, it’s not an issue at all. To be honest, there’s more exciting things in Skins than just one of the characters being gay. There’s no storyline to Maxxie being gay, cos it’s just not an issue. Good.”
Did you have to do any research for the part?
“No, I didn’t do any research on playing a gay character, because in a way, I didn’t want to stereotype. You know gays are stereotyped in a way, but I didn’t do any research at all on it.”
It’s quite a large community you’re reprsenting there. Did you feel the pressure to do that justice?
“No, no, I didn’t. No way. I personally feel nowadays for kids of my age, they’re more accepting to gays, so no, I don’t feel like that.”
So what can we expect from your episode?
“It’s a joint episode with the character Anwar. The whole class goes on a school trip to Russia. A lot of things goes on, like Maxxie and Anwar have a bit of a clash, as Anwar’s Muslim and it all of a sudden begins to be a problem. I’m not going to give away the storyline – but something happens between me and Tony. We get close… and he ends up going down on me. A lot of things happen in the Russia episode. It’s a good episode!”
Really? Tony’s on the turn?
“Yeah, well, as I said, Maxxie does that with Tony. It’s not Maxxie’s choice, but as I said, I can’t really give the storylines too much away. That’s a big thing which happens on the trip, and a lot more other exciting stuff happens as well.”
How did you feel about filming the more racy scenes from the series?
“It’s alright really. The cast and the crew are really professional, get on with their jobs. We’re all friends as well – normally there’s one person you really like in a group, but everyone gets on with everyone. [But] filming that stuff is a bit nervewracking. No matter if I was a gay character or a straight character. If I was doing it with a girl it would be a bit ‘oh, shit’. First time you’re a bit worried, you know what I mean?”
What sort of reaction have you had to the show so far?
“Umm, well all my friends were absolutely amazed. They thought the show was great, they loved every single visual character, they thought they were all different in a way, absoltuely amazing. They loved the show and can’t wait for the next episode!”
And how are you feeling in the buildup to your big episode?
“I’ll be a bit nervous when it comes on. I just dunno, you worry about what people think, but Maxxie’s had pretty good things said about him, saying he’s a good character and that. But I’m still going to be worried when the next episode comes on!”
How realistic is the show when it comes to depicting a teen experience?
“I think that it is. As you can tell, it expanded a bit, things are out of proportion over the top, kind of. It’s not a documentary about life in general. At the end of the day it is a TV show, to entertain people, and I think it’s good.”
And I take it you’re definitely up for doing a possible second series?
“Yeah, hopefully, I hope there is a second series. At the moment, I don’t know if I’m banking on it or not, but if there isn’t a second series. I feel the show’s done enough to produce a second series!”

My name is Malcom and I’am Addicted to Porn
I was flicking through my tv channels and tune in to BBC3, I was suprised to find the zit bloke from episode 4 who had a memorable scene with Chris about pissing on your spots to make them ago away, so anyway his name is Malcolm and he is addicted to porn (Vampire porn that is?) anyway the show is called Teen Hooked on Porn part of their coming of age season, I’m not sure when its on again but his a summary on what the shows about.
This film examines the disturbing reality of teenagers who have become hooked on internet pornography.
One 16 year old from Bristol has looked at porn online since the age of 13 and it has almost overtaken his life. We follow his progress as he seeks therapy and tries to overcome his addiction.
We also meet other younger children who look at porn, some brazenly and others for whom it’s a secret obsession.
Through their stories, the documentary explores the wider issues involved such as the increasing sexualisation of children at an early age. Can the teens who take part in this documentary confront and overcome their problems before they wreck their lives for good?

Daniel Kaluuya aka Posh Kenneth Interview
The Scene Magazine did a interview with Daniel Kaluuya who stars as Posh Kenneth/wannbe gangster.
1. How Are Things Going For You At The Moment?
Things are crazy at the moment…it’s been a very surreal past couple of months…but I’m enjoying every minute of it.
2. Can You Tell Me About Your Background And How You Came To Acting?
Well, I’m from North West London and I’ve been acting for around 4 years, been to loads of drama classes and workshops
3. How Is It Working With The Rest Of The Cast Of Skins?
There all bless guys, they make you feel welcome and everyone just gets on, there is hardly any tension or clashes
4. So What Do You Think Of Your Character “Posh Kenneth”?
On the level, I think he’s a bit nuts, you know. Like when people ask me this, I clocked on and now I describe him as a black guy trying to be ‘black’ if you get me. I seriously believe that certain times he forgets he’s certain pigmentation…he forgets he has melanin in him so he overcompensates it by going a bit crazy, if you get me…
5. Any Talk Of A Second Season Of Skins?
There’s obviously rumours and that, but only time will tell.
6. How Did You Get Into Acting?
I had did writing back in the day like when I was 9, and I gave it up. But like teachers were telling my Mum that I should go drama classes and I got into it, so I thought yeah…I think I started learning to act at the age of 13.
7. Did You Find Yourself Drawing On Your Own Teenage Experiences From School In Portraying Your Character?
A little bit, but not so much because the guy I’m playing is posh…and I didn’t really go to a school where there are those sorts of people…but there is one guy that I know that reminds me of ‘Posh Kenneth’ so I kind of just started from him…
8. How Did You Prepare For The Role?
I usually just get myself hyped up before I say any lines…it needs alot of energy.
9. Do You Have Any Future Film or television Projects Currently Lined Up?
Not really…I think it’s strictly education A-level season, but after maybe…hopefully.
10. What Do You Prefer Comedy Or Serious Roles?
I like a mixture of both, if not I just get bored of having just one sort of reaction on the audience and it’s challenging and more enjoyable to do both.
11. Any Shout Outs?
Big up everyone that knows me! All my family. And big up JDoT! Also big up to YOU for reading this and supporting the cause!

Mike Bailey Interview
4th Interview from Digital Spy
How would you describe the series?
“It’s about a bunch of kids who live in Bristol, and it’s basically going through their lives at a certain point in time. It’s supposed to be about student life and teen life, but it’s more of a comedy and also drama, because there are certain aspects in it which are funny, but it deals with a lot of issues. The good thing about it as well is that with this show, it doesn’t always come right at the end of [each episode]. It’s definitely different to what you’ll see on TV these days.”
Tell me a bit about Sid, if you could?
“Sid is best mates with Tony, he sees Tony as his best friend. Sid looks up to Tony but also he’s in love with Tony’s girlfriend Michelle. He’s close to all his friends, even though his friends don’t notice – there will always be a time when they’re close to the different characters, so he is close to everyone but he still gets bullied a lot. He doesn’t realise it, especially from Tony. It’s not the bullying you see every day – not the physical, the mental, but Sid sticks with it and builds that as he goes through. He moves further away from Tony and becomes more of an independent person.”
Is there a point where he realises Tony is a bit of a twonk?
“There are definitely a few moments where he thinks ‘do I really want this, are you really a friend if you treat me like this?’ But then he sympathises with Tony in the same way, because Tony is always having a hard time throughout the whole series. There are times when he thinks ‘Actually, get lost, I don’t want to do anything with you any more’, but he always goes back.”
This is your first TV role – how daunting has it been?
“I’m at college at the moment doing performing arts and the only things I’ve done before that were plays and stuff at college. I haven’t even done extra work on Casualty, which it seems that everyone in Bristol had! So, this is the first big thing for me, and it’s such a good experience to go from doing absolutely nothing to being a lead character on TV. I’m so proud of myself for getting it, I’m so glad I got it. There’s not many people who can say they had the same possibilitiies and experience as me. So, I mean, I’m well chuffed with myself.”
How strange is it to think that your face is on giant posters across the land?
“It’s really weird. You can guess what you feel like, but until you actually see it, when you’re like ‘that’s a bit weird’. Me and my mate were talking about this yesterday, saying there might be someone in Manchester looking at my face right now and it’s so, so weird. But I love it, this is what I wanted to do, this is my dream, kind of, so I love every minute of it.”
What was it like filming some of the more risqué scenes?
“When you’re filming it, you don’t really think about it. The full naked shots, which all of the male members of the cast had to do at some point, were really different to what you expect it to be – everyone’s so professional when you’re there. The cast and the crew all sympathise and help you realise it’s not the easiest thing to do. When I’m under the covers doing what needs to be done, everyone was having a laugh with that, because it’s something everyone can have a laugh with, admit they did it, everyone’s talked about it. It’s not that bad doing it, but when I have to sit down with my family and watch doing it – well, that’s a whole different story. I’m not looking forward to that – having a quick one in the morning and the family walking in on you – it’s not going to be fun!”
As you mentioned, he’s in love with Michelle but it’s clear that Cassie is in love with him. How does that triangle develop?
“It starts off with him madly in love with Michelle, and that pretty much sticks out through the whole series. He gets to this point where he realises that he really does love Cassie. He just sees her as a friend, somebody he can sympathise with, somebody he can relate to in some respect, because she’s kind of an outcast from the group. You can tell Cassie’s falling in love with him, but he just doesn’t realise it. Then, when he actually has the chance to snog Michelle, he thinks, ‘Actually, I can get a much better thing with Cassie’. He juggles between the two of them through the series, and I’m not going to tell you how it ends! You’ll have to wait and find out on that one.”
What can we expect from Sid’s episode?
“The focus of my episode is more based on my family, the fact that my parents – who are played by Josie Lawrence and Peter Capaldi – are breaking apart. It starts off with Sid failing exams, failing a piece of coursework, and it just shows how some of the smallest [things] are affected by the family drifting away. His mum leaves, and Sid just loses it with his dad, as he realises ‘you’re more of a waste of space than I’ll ever be’. Sid’s dad is always bringing him down, saying ‘what are you doing with your life, is there any point to it?’ At the end of it, he gets his own back on his dad.
“My episode is definitely an episode where lots of things come in. He’s watching his parents fall apart, he tries to get with Michelle but loses it, he’s trying to do this essay, and at the end of it he doesn’t – nothing good comes out of it. That’s one of the good things about my episode, it isn’t one of those ones where in about twenty minutes time Sid’s going to be okay.”
And Josie Lawrence as your mum! How good was that?
“It’s really good, because I got to learn so much. The thing with Josie as well, she’s known as a comedy actor, so working with her in a serious way is just so good, because you get to see the two ways in which she works – she can do the serious stuff, and she can do the comedy stuff really well. Also, there’s Peter Capaldi who plays my dad. He was really, really good, because he properly came into the scene, he’d thought about it and stuff, and we’d talk it through and everything. The older actors and younger actors have all been amazing – there’s not one person I wouldn’t want to work with again. I’ve enjoyed it so much and I’ve been so lucky at this age to work with all these great actors.”
How well did the cast get on?
“Everyone gets along, we were all so happy. Joe [Chris], Nick [Tony] and Dev [Anwar] don’t live in Bristol, so they used to come down and we used to go out on nights, we used to have a laugh on set. There wasn’t any friction, everyone got on well the whole way through. Since we finished filming, I’ve missed everyone so much, and to have a job where you’re working with really, really great people, it’s amazing as well.”
What are your thoughts on a possible second series?
“Everyone is keen, I really want to do a second series. I loved doing the first series, so a second series would be absolutely amazing. But, I’m thinking of it as we’re not doing it, so when we find out if we are doing it, then it’ll just be like, so much better. I definitely want to do it. “

SKINS
10 x 60 minute episodes

Online Premiere on MySpace & E4
E4’s landmark drama series Skins is back with ten brand new episodes that follow the chaotic lives and lusts of a group of spliff-toting British teenagers.
It’s been six months since Tony’s (Nicholas Hoult) collision with a bus – remarkably he isn’t dead, but he sure isn’t the same person. As if waking up with a body that doesn’t work properly isn’t tough enough, getting back on top of things is even harder when your friends are all acting totally weird.
Sid (Mike Bailey) can’t get his head around the fact that his best mate is a shadow of the man he’s always looked up to. And to top it he finally got the girl, Cassie, only to have her whisked off to Scotland by her crazy parents. Sod’s law. But to Cassie (Hannah Murray) it’s totally okay because they’ll email all the time and then one day she’ll come back and they’ll live happily ever after… yeah right.
Michelle (April Pearson) is lost without Tony too, and her Mum has gone and married yet another man – but this time there’s a step-sister involved who’s intent on trying to make a move on her mates. Maxxie’s (Mitch Hewer) got hell at home too because his Dad (Bill Bailey) doesn’t want him to follow his dream of being a dancer. Even Anwar (Dev Patel) has changed since he bagged himself a secret girlfriend called Sketch (Aimee-Ffion Edwards).
Her mates are mixed up, but Jal (Larissa Wilson) is throwing off the good girl image and letting her hair down. And Chris (Joe Dempsie) – well getting expelled wasn’t his finest hour – but now the party animal is stepping out on his own so at least his future is bright… what could go wrong? And while all around is falling apart, it’s Effy (Kaya Scodelario) who’s taking control.
Series two features a host of new guest appearances. including Shane Richie, Bill Bailey and Josie Long. who will join returning guest stars Harry Enfield, Arabella Weir, Geoffrey Hughes, Josie Lawrence and Peter Capaldi.
E4’s hit drama Skins will make a double debut online, with the first episode of the brand new series to be played on leading social network MySpace and on recently re-launched www.E4.com
